Electric Furnace Problems Please Read

Box-type filters generally have an arrow somewhere along the edge that indicates the direction of air flow through the filter. Be sure this arrow is pointing towards the furnace. When box-type filters are dirty, throw them away and install new. Foam filters have no front or back so can be installed either way. They are generally held in place with wire clips. When dirty foam filters can be hand-washed in warm soapy water.

My problem is my heater turns on, but the fan does not blow heat out. Is there some kind of switch like a thermostat to get the fan going? To ensure your furnace runs its best, your A-coil needs to be clean. If your home has a split-unit air conditioner, you will find an A-coil inside your furnace either above or below your blower. Even though you may not be running your air conditioner, air from the blower still needs to pass through the A-coil to heat your home.

This goes on sequentially until all the conduits are turned on for the heating cycle. Pilot stays lit, fire comes on, but the fan doesn’t come on. This is an $8 part located on the lower side of the furnace by the fire box. There is no way to test it, you just have to replace it and see if that fixes the problem.

A common reason here is a dying sequencer that can no longer generate signals appropriately to keep the furnace running normally. Maybe it generates a signal for the first few heating elements then loses track. As we mentioned initially, the clearest sign that you may have a bad heat sequencer is a tripped circuit breaker. You’re almost sure that the sequencer is faulty if the breaker trips right when you start the furnace.

I counted to ten, turned it back on, and was rewarded with the sound of the furnace kicking in. If your blower motor needs oiling, that should be done twice a year. Manually-lubricated fan motors will have TWO oil ports.

I decided I'd wait for winter again before replacing the switch, but then we had a spell of very hot weather. We don't usually use our air conditioner, but when the house hit 95 degrees, I turned it on. If the burner in your standing-pilot furnace won’t light, try these troubleshooting steps. When problems arise, knowing how your gas furnace functions will help you determine what the problem may be. To understand how a typical manufactured home furnace operates, check out this flow-chart. If the cleaning of the flame sensor does not fix your issue, it’s possible that you’ll need to replace the sensor altogether due to a possible parts defect.

So how do you go through an electrical wiring diagram? See if the circuit breakers in the circuit breaker box tripped to the OFF position. Check the SSU light switch on the gray box located at the furnace to make sure it is in the ON position. The covers on these units are a pain to take off and put back on.

Otherwise, test it with a multimeter for continuity to see if it's defective. Sometimes a block diagram is accustomed to display how an Over-all system is effective. Evaluate Figure 4 to determine a block diagram of a normal am radio. The parts, including the amplifier, are grouped with each other in phases. However, it’s OK to bypass it temporarily, perhaps for a few minutes, to confirm that it’s broken. The sequencer is bad if the furnace works when you bypass the sequencer.

See if your circuit breaker has been tripped to the OFF position. By the way, if you have a problem with the furnace flame sensor, you can usually clean that with steel wool to remove burnt dust and any oxidation to make it as good as new. Never would have saw that reset on the limit switch if I hadn't seen the detailed pictures. My husband was at work and my dad and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Husband said, "look for the green light!" So I googled and came up with your post.

Another tell-tale sign of having a bad centrifugal or pressure switch is that you can hear the combustion/induced draft motor run and run without the burners ever lighting. Of course, when the burners don’t light after 2 or 3 tries, the furnace will shut down. If the thermostat is set right and your pilot still won’t light, you could have a problem with the thermocoupler or a dirty pilot light . First be sure that the thermocoupler hasn’t slipped or shifted and not getting the full flame from the pilot light. If that’s not the problem, then replace the thermocoupler and check that the pilot light is clear of any debri. Next time your forced-air gas furnace acts up, perhaps one of these basic troubleshooting tips will save you a service call.

The next time this happens, I will try resetting that switch before I call for service. Many furnaces today have some sort of diagnostic indicator that can sometimes tell you what is wrong. For my furnace, it's a flashing green light and the cover of the control box helpfully tells you just what these lights mean. There’s two ways of inspecting your heat exchanger for holes or cracks. One way is to remove the burner and do a visual inspection with a light and mirror. If you are a qualified technician, click here to view a PDF file from Coleman with details on doing a visual inspection and replacement.

I bought a new thermostat, but that changed nothing. Thinking it might still be that limit switch, I ordered one of those. Learn how to troubleshoot your Coleman forced-hot-air furnace before you call a repairman. You could save yourself a good deal of money.

As you may recall, we mentioned at the beginning that the sequencer has pairs of wires running into it that connect to different heating elements in the furnace. If you’re wondering, yes, you can bypass the furnace’s heat sequencer. This is never a good idea, considering the importance of the sequencer. For example, maybe your electric furnace has ten heating elements, but only the first two come on.

This box is labeled blend-air and it’s function is to bring in fresh air. If there’s a problem with the blend-air unit, a red light will flash and you may hear a beep. The unit should have a switch to shut off the beeper so it doesn’t drive you nuts.

Repair or Replace: Replacing Existing Equipment

To make the adjustment, lift off the cover from the thermostat and locate the anticipator. If your furnace is running short cycles, the anticipator is probably set on .2 or lower. Check your furnace manual and move the lever or dial to the setting they recommend which is normally in the .3 to .4 range. Some thermostats have an anticipator for both a/c and heat. Your thermostat might be calibrated improperly and as a result, is adjusting incorrectly. Check to see if your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, if so then use this to adjust the heat anticipator.
